They missed the sound of laughter down the hall, of games in the garden and bedtime stories, since their once small children had grown up and left home.

They missed the sound of laughter down the hall, of games in the garden and bedtime stories, since their once small children had grown up and left home.

One day, a magazine ad caught Penelope’s eye: “Respite Carers Needed.” She recognised the words and knew what they meant – they got her mind thinking, and set her heart aflutter –remembering how she and Ian had loved nurturing and guiding their own children’s young minds.

That night, Penelope poured her husband a nice cup of tea and told him her idea. By the end of the cup, Ian was on board. But the decision wasn’t made lightly – they knew the experience of raising their own kids didn’t necessarily mean they’d be ideal respite carers. But they also knew this could be their chance to rekindle some of the warmth and love that once filled their home – and offer a hand up to a child in need.

Weeks of discussions followed, filled with a mix of excitement and apprehension. They researched respite care, the challenges and rewards, and what it meant to care for a child in the foster care system. It was actually Ian who discovered an upcoming information session at a local foster care agency. They both agreed, this is what they needed to help convince them one way or another.

The Leap

Stacey, a seasoned respite carer, was running the session and welcomed the couple on arrival. Her smile alone put Penelope and Ian at ease; their butterflies had settled. Stacey spoke with an infectious passion about the children, the foster carers, and the importance of respite care.

“It’s like giving foster parents a chance to take a deep breath, and the children the opportunity to expand their connections” Stacey explained, her voice warm and encouraging. “A weekend to recharge, to know their little ones are safe and having different experiences in another caring home.”

Penelope and Ian exchanged a glance. They understood the importance of a break, and what Stacey was implying. But were they the right fit? Would the experience of raising their own children translate to caring for children who had faced challenges they couldn’t even imagine?

As if sensing their hesitation, Stacey leaned closer. “Don’t you worry,” she said, her voice dropping to a gentle tone. “You’ve already got the most important things – big hearts and a willingness to learn. The training will give you the tools, and there’s a whole network of us out there to support each other.”

Stacey shared stories – funny, heartwarming, but sometimes heartbreaking. She spoke of the challenges, the moments of frustration, but most importantly, the immense satisfaction of making a difference in a child’s life. Her words, filled with experience, washed away their doubts. Penelope and Ian left the session that day, their hearts brimming with a newfound determination. They were ready. They would take the leap and become respite carers.

Several months later, with their assessment, training and checks complete, Penelope and Ian received the news they’d been waiting for – foster care approval. The agency explained that only then, would the careful process of matching them with a child begin – aiming to find the best fit for everyone involved. Finally, after a few weeks of anticipation, they received the call.

Maggie, foster carer to Jack, spent weeks getting to know Penelope and Ian. The conversation flowed easily, filled with stories about Jack’s likes and dislikes, his routines, and even some of his favourite snacks. They also learned about some of the challenges he’d faced in his past and the progress he’d made in Maggie’s care. They saw the love and care Maggie had poured into Jack’s life, and they felt a responsibility to honour that foundation.

Penelope and Ian spent days preparing their home for Jack’s arrival. They set up a spare room as his haven, complete with a mountain of beanbags and a bookshelf stocked with books to read together. Ian cleaned up a couple of old fishing rods – you never know. On the day, Penelope baked Jack’s favourite choc-chip cookies, their aroma filling the house as he walked through their door for the first of many, many times.

A Happy Place

A Happy Place

Jack started asking questions about the couple’s children – would he get to meet them one day?

Ian was sure that was a good sign. Penelope and Jack would make cookies together, so long as he helped clean the dishes. Smiles became laughter during movie nights – and as time went by, they saw a slow and steady change in Jack. Maggie saw it too – Jack was returning to her and talking about his weekends with Ian and Pen, as he now liked to call her.

Penelope and Ian knew they were making a difference. They could see glimpses of a happy child, like the ones they had raised. But the truth was, Jack was making a difference for them too.
